Frenectomy
A frenum is a muscular attachment in the mouth. In your mouth there are two frenums. The labial frenum which connects the top of your gums to the inside of your upper lip and the lingual frenum which connects the underside of your tongue to the bottom of your mouth.
A prominent frenum can restrict tongue and lip movement leading to difficulty with speech and eating. The frenum can sometimes attach between the middle front teeth resulting in a diastema (midline spacing between the front middle teeth).
A frenectomy is a surgical procedure in which the frenum is surgically removed to eliminate tongue and lip restriction.
This is a relatively simple procedure and can be performed under local or general anaesthetic.
